Yes. Afiwi’s West African Drumming Level 1 program is designed as a hands-on introduction to the djembe and foundational drumming patterns, making it appropriate for students who are new to drumming.

Afiwi’s West African Drumming Level 1 is available for ages 6+. Level 2 is designed for students ages 11+ who have developed the fundamentals and are ready to explore more complex rhythms.

You do not need to purchase a drum before requesting a trial. After you submit the trial form, Afiwi can provide the class details and let you know what your child should bring for their first session.

A djembe is a hand-played West African drum traditionally used for rhythm, music, dance and community gatherings. In Afiwi’s drumming classes, students learn foundational djembe technique, rhythm, listening and ensemble playing while connecting with West African musical traditions.

Afiwi’s West African drumming classes are held at Afiwi Groove School, 1895 Clements Road, Unit 102, Pickering, Ontario L1W 3V5.

If your child enjoys the trial and you would like to continue, you can complete their registration through Afiwi’s parent registration system. You’ll be able to enroll them in the appropriate drumming level and continue with the regular program.
