"I AM"- Showcase:
Where Culture becomes the bridge between identity, confidence & Belonging!

She was born into a world that couldn't decide who she was.

On one side is a fast, loud digital world, handing her a thousand identities and asking her to choose one. On the other is an ancestral calling, deep, steady, full of rhythm and truth. She can feel it, but she cannot yet name it.

She is caught in the middle. Torn. Searching. Slowly losing parts of herself.

Through powerful encounters, African and Caribbean dance, live drumming, and the voices of those who came before her, she begins the only journey that will ever truly matter.

THE REALITY

She is one of thousands.
The missing boys and girls of Ontario.

This is not just one girl’s story. It is a crisis unfolding quietly in communities across Ontario every single day.

1 in 3 Youth Have No Cultural Identity Anchor

Young people in Black and diaspora communities across Ontario are feeling increasingly disconnected from their cultural roots. For many, this loss of connection affects their confidence, their sense of belonging, and how they see themselves as they grow.

68% Of Cultural Arts Programs Go Unfunded

Across the GTA, culturally grounded arts education is chronically underfunded. These children go without the mentorship, the stage, and the mirror that tells them: your heritage is worth celebrating.

The Cost of Staying Silent

When young people grow up without a strong sense of identity, the impact does not stop with them. It shows up in their confidence, their sense of belonging, and their ability to stay connected. And if nothing changes, that disconnection can be carried forward from one generation to the next.

THE ANSWER

"This is what Afiwi Groove School has been doing for over a decade. We give her a stage, a story, and the words to fill in her blank."

The I AM Showcase is our 13th anniversary production, a professionally staged celebration of African and Caribbean arts where youth take the stage to share their rhythm, culture, and confidence.

With two shows and over 1,200 audience members in attendance, the showcase follows one girl as she searches for her answer and, in doing so, carries every young person in the audience along with her.
